An independent reference about household fridges. We are not a workshop or a service, and we are not connected with the former website on this domain; we take no orders and do no repairs.

Topics

Reference topics

Every page of the reference is filed under one of four topics. The first explains what happens inside the cabinet. The second covers food and temperatures. The third is about regular care. The fourth helps you tell a small issue you can easily fix yourself from a fault that a specialist should handle.

Many breakdowns start with small things: a door that does not quite close, a blocked drain hole, a cabinet pushed against the wall. They are easier to notice early than to deal with later.

— Editor's note

How we choose topics: the question has to come up for an ordinary fridge owner, and the answer must not require tools, opening the cabinet or electrical work. Anything beyond that we honestly call a job for a technician.

How it works

How a fridge carries heat from the inside out, what its main parts are and why some of its quirks that worry newcomers are actually normal.

  • Glossary of terms

Compressor, condenser, evaporator, refrigerant and other words you meet in manuals, explained briefly and without formulas.

  • Why a warm wall is normal

A short answer on the home page: where the fridge releases heat and why the cabinet needs free air around it.

  • No Frost and drip defrost

Two common defrost designs in general terms: how they differ in everyday use and what that means for care.

Storage

Which temperatures are usually recommended, where the compartment is warmer and colder, and how to arrange food so that air can move freely.

  • Questions on temperature and storage

What to do with warm food, why milk is better kept off the door and how to tell whether the thermostat is set correctly.

  • A new fridge: the first days

A collection for anyone who has just brought a fridge home: from unpacking to the first load of groceries.

  • The thermometer check

The first step of the check on the home page: how to measure the real temperature in the compartment without special instruments.

Care

Defrosting, cleaning, looking after the door seal and the drain hole, getting ready to go away. All of it can be done without tools and without touching the inner workings.

Faults and technicians

Signs that should make you wary, simple checks that need no disassembly, and questions worth asking a repair service. Moving and disposing of an old fridge are covered here too.

  • If the fridge breaks down

A collection of first steps: how to save the food, what to check and how to describe the problem to a technician.

  • Technicians, moving, disposal

Answers on choosing a repair service, the warranty on work, transporting a fridge and what to do with an old one.

  • Archive of pages

Every page of the reference by date and topic, in case you are looking for something specific.

  • Practical

Defrosting and cleaning a fridge step by step, plus the catalogue of practical articles.

Information is current as of the date of preparation. Fridge models differ, so check your model's manual for exact temperature settings, the defrosting procedure, which positions are allowed during transport and how long to wait before switching on. This reference explains general principles and does not replace advice from a qualified technician.
